Veterans Study Course – Warrior’s Heart

Warrior’s Heart: A Secular Mindfulness Meditation Correspondence Course for Veterans

Veterans Peace of Mind offers a correspondence study course to veterans, which is a comprehensive and thorough introduction to the non-religious practice of meditation.

We provide a book, Warrior’s Heart: Mindfulness Practice for Veterans, an accompanying Source Book with relevant articles of science, general information, and compositions written by veterans who are familiar with meditation practice, incarcerated and otherwise, familiar with the practice.

The course trains one in formal sitting meditation, as well as a number of other mindfulness techniques to ground oneself in heart, body, and environment, learning to deal with emotional conflicts inwardly and in relation to other people. The course looks in detail at problems of anger, and at Post-Traumatic Stress, and provides methods of dealing with stuck, toxic beliefs, repeating nightmares, and other healing methods.

We have a one-on-one teaching model, which provides personal communication with a meditation instructor, and all materials and services are offered free of charge. Inquiries from interested veterans should be sent to:

Vets’ comments on the Warrior’s Heart Study Course:

The Warrior’s Heart Course has helped me a lot. It’s revealed things about me I never realized or simply took for granted. It’s showed me or provided me the resources to learn about me, why I act certain ways, have certain habits, thoughts, etc. What I’ve found most helpful is probably the variety of tools and directions to practice. But also I’ve found increasingly helpful is that the label ‘broken person’ is an excuse, a lie, and, frankly, subjective healing is possible.

It has had a heart felt impact and has helped me with my PTSD. It’s hard to choose on what was helpful because I try 1 or 2 different practices every day. It’s all amazing.

It helped me realize that in some ways I was stuck in a rut; got lazy, fell into mindless habitual patterns even in my meditation. Some of the questions shocked me into contemplating aspects of my mind (memories, attitudes, etc.) that had remained unexamined for decades–out of fear and complacency. This made my daily practice cleaner, clearer, more precise, more effective. I am now more awake. Thank you.

It has taught me about treating myself and this experience with positivity, kindness, and compassion, even if it is uncomfortable. It showed me a new level of self-awareness that I didn’t know was inside of me. I now also know that a thought is just a thought. I still don’t have it down to a perfect science, but I’m getting better at it every time. I’m no longer afraid of being uncomfortable, and I no longer try to numb out/avoid things like I used to.

It has truly changed my life in a powerful way. I finally feel like I’m getting to know myself and become strong in who I am. I found the section on trauma triggers very helpful because it brought awareness to what really sets me off, not just externally but internally, which was my biggest issue–accepting me for who I am and where I am at.

It has opened my eyes to a whole new world of peace. It has changed me for the better and opened my mind to so many options of peace and release of my inner demons….Thank you so very much for what you do!…More vets need you!

This is an amazing course. It has helped me go beyond what I thought I could….I know several people that can benefit from it, too….Thank you again. You have helped me more than you can know.

Veterans' Comments

I’ve been practicing mindfulness meditation for over 5 years. Meditation changed my life in profound ways. I’m more calm. I have tools to deal with stress. I have more awareness of trauma triggers and I’m less reactive. When I get upset, I can calm down by practicing mindfulness … I don’t know what my life would be today if I hadn’t found meditation. — C

An astonished veteran exclaimed at the progress of a mustang named Mama. “She is not the same horse we worked with a month ago. If Mama can heal so quickly, so can we. She gives us hope.” — C

Awareness helps us to notice things. It helps us to notice when we are being a jerk. … There was a situation about 6 months ago between me and my friend in class where he flipped out. He was ready to fight. Since I've started meditation I am more calm. Instead of flying off the handle I was able to maintain my calm because of my awareness. I could feel my anger building but I didn’t let it take control. I knew the anger was building. — RV

I have experienced this a little: to go deeper than the feeling of anger to see what it is that makes me feel that. I have found that most of the time it is fear, fear of my security, my peace, my world being upset. I don’t know where the insight comes from but when you can calm the mind I could really think clearly and gain some wisdom to why I acted in anger. — MF

Yet the real virtue comes with my experiences with people. I’ve become less arrogant so I listen better. I am less affected by the negativities of prison. For example I don’t meet insult with abuse. Mindfulness allows me to watch the insult pass. My head is smaller but it contains more space! – LC

Patience is not an easy task … Being in prison since I was 17 years old with no sign of ever physically leaving this place, I have learned to become such great friends with patience…It humbles me. I get too upset about my prison circumstances of life, patience brings me back to reality…many of us are suffering and life circumstances can be brutal for anyone of us, not just me. — KW
