Mindfulness Exercises – Group Zoom Call January 14, 2026
Gary Allen, Co-Executive Director of the Mindfulness Peace Project, does guided meditation with the breath technique we teach in prisons. He discusses with the Mindfulness Exercises group how “to make friends with yourself” by using meditation to open to whatever states of mind arise and whatever conflicts they bring up, without either suppressing or clinging to them. Instead he encourages warmth and spaciousness toward yourself as a way to develop non-aggression toward yourself and the world. He then talks about the American prison system and bringing meditation and dharma into it. This includes a discussion of the work we’ve done with military vets using mindfulness and equine-assisted therapy. Includes questions and answers with mindfulness volunteers throughout the video.

A Presentation for Prison Inmate Groups
These three videos were recorded during the COVID period for our Buddhist prison inmate groups in Colorado, while volunteers were not allowed to visit the state facilities. They’re led by Gary Allen, the Co-Executive Director of Mindfulness Peace Project, and they follow our standard group format. First we do introductory chants, which includes the Heart Sutra, plus chants invoking three lineages: Nyingma, Kagyu, and Shambhala. This is followed by a period of sitting meditation with guided instruction. When the sitting ends, Gary discusses one of three primary principles the Buddha taught: discipline (shila), meditation (samadhi), and knowledge (prajňa). The session ends with the chanting of the Dedications of Merit.
We’re making these available for anyone who would like to use them in a prison setting to help train inmates in Buddhist practice. The texts of the chants we do are available for download here available for download here as PDFs.
